Why do you need to provide personal information in order to remove your personal information from the web?

I checked to see what the process would be to go about getting my personal information off of their website.
They need me to fax proof of my identity such as a photo id. Why do they even care who you are? They never asked me permission to put my information on their site in the first place, I don’t quite get why they need proof of my identity in order to remove my information.
Why do they need more information to remove information?
