How do I stop my wi-fi connection from "skipping"/stopping and starting rapidly?

Asked by derektherock42 (201points) August 26th, 2011

I’m going off to college in a week, and I don’t want to leave this problem to my family to fix.

So the Wi-Fi connection keeps hiccuping. All I’ve been able to do is temporary fixes. Usually this involves logging into the router from my computer and switching the channel. I find a channel that works well through trial-and-error, and everything works great. Until it eventually starts skipping again, usually a day or three later. Another way to fix it temporarily is to reset it to factory settings and set it back up.

The result is that every device using the wi-fi is crippled. On all computers (Macs and PC’s), a web page sometimes loads fine and sometimes stalls. We have a cell signal booster and our home-phone using the router, and call quality is bad when this problem exists. Anybody have any suggestions?
