I have a twelve-year-old niece who I sometimes accidentally introduce as my cousin instead of my niece. Even though I’m much older than her, I don’t feel as generationally removed from her, I guess.
But that got me thinking…is your cousin really closer to you genetically than your niece? Generationally, sure. But when it comes down to genes, who are you actually closer to? Your cousins? Or your nieces and nephews?
