Which would be the best towing option?

In towing a small travel trailer (about 2000 lbs) which would be the more fuel efficient:
A bigger truck, think Ford F-250 with an 8-cyl engine (14–16 mpg), or a smaller truck (18–22 mpg) with a 6 cyl (Toyota Tacoma or equiv.). Anyone know any easy formulas for calculating such?
