What happens to the orphans on the General and Social sections?

I haven’t been here long, so I’m still exploring. I’ve noticed the orphan categories and now wonder what happens to these questions? Do they just hang around forever? How long should a question sit before the questioner writes off any hope of a response? Does the questioner have the ability to remove the question?
