Does materialism cause advertising? Or does advertising cause materialism?

Just doing a bit of research and came across an interesting topic.. Most people will agree that we live in a materialistic society and that advertising in the media has a lot to do with it.
BUT:
Is our materialistic society a RESULT of excessive advertising about needless posessions? Or is this advertising caused by the materialistic lifestyles many of us live.
