Is it legal to park after the street cleaners have passed?

The sign says no parking for street cleaning. But the street cleaners have already passed. Is it okay to park?
I wasn’t sure, so I asked a police officer who said it’s okay. I parked. Now I’ve got a parking ticket.
Was the police officer wrong? Are there more than one street cleaning truck? Do I need to get a statement from the officer to contest this ticket?
