Are people being honest that their hands crack and bleed in winter?

I keep reading that peoples’ hands “get so dry” in winter that they crack or even crack and bleed. Is this factual or an exaggeration? I cannot picture blood on someone’s hands just because the humidity is low and the air cold. Seems like they’d become infected.
