What's the process of learning to drive?

It sounds dumb, I know. I turn 17 in a week and I really want to learn to drive as soon as possible. Obviously I know you have lessons and take a test, but what’s a provisional licence and theory, and where do they come into things? Also, my mum has agreed to teach me to drive to save money, but how would I go about booking my test? Thanks for the help :)
