How do I set defaults in excel?

It’s excel 2003. Every time I make a graph I have to change the settings and it gets really tedious and time consuming. For example, if I make a scatter graph I don’t want solid blocks, nor do I want the background of the graph to always be gray. I’m trying to figure out how to make a default so that every time I start a new excel spreadsheet I don’t have to waste like an hour being nit-picky at these settings.
