Why does iTunes insist that there is not enough space on my phone when there is?

I have the latest version of iTunes and a 16GB iPhone 4 with the latest version of iOS. I am trying to sync a few songs to the phone. I went into the music tab, selected my favourite genres and selected apply then sync. It’s 4.55GB, 910 songs. The bar at the bottom tells me there will be 5.22GB remaining.
When i sync, after a moment iTunes comes back and tells me it needs another 1.92GB.
