On the American Sherlock Holmes show, why is Watson not a soldier?

The American TV version of Sherlock Holmes (don’t worry British people, he has an accent) decided to mix things up and have Watson be a female instead of a male character.
She is a Doctor. She is not, however, retired from the military. Moreover, she has no self defensive skills at all.
Why do you think they made the decision to take away that part of the character? I am pretty sure we have tons of female veterans about lately.
