Tipping gas station attendants?

My friend needed gas and pulls into the same service station that i use all the time. Its a full service gas station. While the man is pumping the gas she hands me a $1.00 and tells me to hand it to him when he gets done pumping the gas. I laughed and said your joking. She said no you should always tip them.. I was embarrassed handing him the $1.00 but he appreciated the tip. Now i make sure i tip all the time. Does anybody else tip their gas station attendant?
