How would you describe the smell of sagebrush?

When I was in the Grand Tetons, I was (for some reason) shocked to find that sagebrush is aromatic. The wildflowers were blooming at the same time, so I’m not sure how much the scents mixed. Are you familiar with sagebrush? How would you describe its scent?
(The best I can do is sweetly astringent.)
