Why would my ex be stopped by cops in Colorado?

Ran into my ex last night at a party. He and his GF were in his new Mercedes RV in Colorado and were stopped by police . They asked if they could search the vehicle, they did then left. Why do you think they were stopped? He said something about the new marijuana laws causing this; not sure how he said it. He has a Texas license plate.
