Can a vehicle still experience vapor lock?

Asked by rojo (24179points) August 26th, 2013

I thought that fuel injection and modernization had all but eliminated vapor lock but last week my truck seemed to suffer from it twice; both times while climbing out of the desert into the Chisos Mountains.
The first time I pulled over to an overlook and it just died, it was still in drive and I was not yet at a complete stop It started right up again after I put it in park.
The second time (the next day) I was again slowing down on an uphill and it sputtered but I goosed it and it kept running.
Other factors that might have affected it were the altitude, it is usually at 300 ft above sea level and was then closer to 5600 feet but from the desert to the basin is only about 400 ft elevation change. The second factor was temperature, it was in the high 90’s/lo 100’s in the desert but the truck had been driven less than 35 miles. Third factor, I was on the gas continuously for the 5 or 6 mile uphill trip before both incidents. Finally, fluid levels were good and had been topped off and the coolant changed before trip.
The engine exhibited no other symptoms or problems before either episode, ran fine before and continues to do so since.
So, was it vapor lock or something else?
