Do men with wives live longer, generally, and why?

I have always heard that life expectancy goes up for men who have a wife and that single males generally die sooner. Of course, if the women shoot them it’s not true. But have you heard this tale? And if you believe it, why do you think it’s true?
I have an old friend who was married to a very mentally ill woman, very sweet lady, for 45 years. A year ago she died. Now he says his life is much less stressful and he is doing more volunteer work but he looks terrible. He looks ten years older than he did when she was alive and ill.
Is there any truth to wives increasing life expectancy in men?
