How to get a elephant ear corm ready for Winter ?

We have a huge elephant ear plant on our deck – so far as I know,
before the first hard freeze we must cut off all the leaves, remove the corm ( a big bulb ) from the container and put it in a paper bag of dirt in the basement – anyone done this ?
