What drug treatment is currently being trialed for metastatic melanoma?

Asked by auntydeb (3245points) October 25th, 2014

A family member is about to begin a specific treatment as part of a trial, for malignant melanoma (nodular) which has metastasized to his liver, lungs and stomach. The drug to be used is already being prescribed in the US, but has not yet received NICE approval here in the UK; although it seems that it will be made available from February 2015. Information given so far suggests that the drug has had very good results in the US, if suited to the patient, with extended life expectancy and quality of life. Just wondering what it might be and happy to research further. It is not appropriate to pursue the information from family members right now as things are a little sensitive.
