Where did the concept of the silver cord come from?

In culture the three fates cut ones cord effectively killing the person and in astral traveling also has a sliver cord where one is lost if the cord is severed. In Dungeons and Dragon’s an astral dreadnought can sever someone’s cord in the astral plane. Also an astral wind can sever a new cord.
What other information do you have on Astral traveling? For those who don’t believe in astral traveling you can refer me to someone who does?
