I have a question about inactive accounts and why are they still on this site?

I am new to the collective and have noticed that some accounts on here haven’t been active for as long as 5 years, so am wondering why are the accounts still on the site, just curious. Do accounts that haven’t been closed by the user stay here indefinitely? Or am I missing something? Please explain and thank you in advance.
