Shoe and style suggestions for an awkward height couple?

Hello again!
So I’ve mentioned way back when that my boyfriend and I have a bit of a height difference. I’m about 4.5 inches taller than he is (5’4” and 5’8.5”) and only about 2–3 when he’s wearing his shoes. We’ve been together for a long time now, so the whole negative feeling I used to have with him has pretty much faded at this point. I just don’t wear heels really lol.
We are going out to a really expensive/hip yet fancy restaurant for New Years Eve and thus will be dressing appropriately. However, we really don’t do fancy events together, so I guess I’m trying to figure out what to do in the way of shoes. While I’m comfortable with the difference on the regular, I don’t know if that feeling will stay if we are catapulted to a 10 inch difference once the shoes are on!
I’m wearing a similar dress to this in blue:
just image it with a deeper v in the middle and on someone who isn’t a size 00 and has boobs.

What type of shoes should each of us wear in order to keep us semi-normal? Or should I just have both of my middle fingers up to the world and wear my tall ass silver heels? I feel like flats would look weird with the dress style, but I don’t know if I should go for a kitten heel or get him to wear his nice tennis shoes, RDJ style:
