How does the Passbook app work on my iPhone?

It looks like my Walgreens and Hilton Honors automatically loaded somehow. I tried to scan my library card and my Lowes card and neither seem to be working. What exactly is the passbook for and should I be able to load in all my frequent flyer/shopping type cards?
