How, or why do some things get the public to go absolutely crazy over, such as texting, Facebook, or even rubber necking accidents on the freeway?

What is it about these things, that people get so obsessive about?
While Facebook might be the lesser of this three, people still seem to have an obsession with it.
Texting even though it’s illegal to text and drive, people are still doing it like crazy, WHY?
And accidents, the accident can be on the opposite side of a divided highway well off the road and yet both sides of the highway come to almost a complete stop, because drivers must stop and stare at it, WHY?
What is it about these things, that make them become an absolute obsession for most people?
