Is the detailed "information" I am quoting about Native Americans, factual?

Asked by JackAdams (6574points) September 7th, 2008

I have heard, without being able to quote the precise source, that if a Native American (“Indian”) resides on an official Native American reservation, and earns all of his/her income while residing on that reservation, that the Native American doing so is EXEMPT from the reporting and payment of ANY federal income taxes.

Is that accurate/true? Is one segment of American society being given “a pass” on the reporting/payment of federal income taxes, based on race and geographic location?

President John F. Kennedy once noted that, “The treatment of the American Indian is a national disgrace!” I certainly concur with that sentiment, wholeheartedly, but I question whether it is “fair” to all Americans, to give certain ones some kind of exemption from the reporting/payment of federal taxes, just based on their ethnic heritage and DNA.

Yes, atrocities were indeed committed against the ancestors of the present-day Native Americans, but I sometimes believe our wonderful nation goes a little bit “overboard,” when it comes to undoing wrongs made against those who are no longer living.
