What's a good, sturdy little houseplant for my kitchen window?

No succulents.
The spot is sunny, but cold in cold weather—not well protected.
Looking for something that might spread to about 10” circumference (size of plant, not size of pot, which would be about 5–6”) but without long, gangly trailing vines.
Best if it thrives on a little benign neglect. I like plants, but I’m not very knowledgeable about them.
