The identity chooses the person vs. the person chooses the identity?

an example to get me started: some vegetarians will say that they will not eat meat because they are vegetarian, but other people say that they wont eat meat therefore they are vegetarian.

do you believe that people should identify themselves as something because its defined that way, or should people do what they normally do and then be defined?

my opinion is the latter, because everyone should be themselves and do whatever makes them happy.
