How can I play PAL region 2 DVDs in the US?

I have series one of BBC’s Life On Mars and thought my Sony DVD player could play it (someone told me Sony’s were “region free” and could play PAL) but, unfortunately, was wrong. Is there some kind of adapter or something that I could buy in order to play my discs? Do I need to get a different DVD player? Is there an inexpensive option I can take?
