What should I do about my VAIO?

Okay, so I work for IT in a division of an engineering company. A coworker gave me a Sony VAIO laptop with an assumed motherboard issue for free. I have two options with the laptop. I can either A) have my conjunctures confirmed (or denied) by a technician for about $50, if confirmed I will have to pay roughly $300–450 to replace and buy whatever parts (VAIO’s are notoriously hard to MOD/fix/alter internally at all). I could B) sell the Laptop on Ebay advertising that it does not have a proper mother board (as of my opinion) and get some moolah from this.
