Why are we, as Americans apparently unconcerned with the state of the nation?

Most Americans polled do NOT want to stay in Iraq, are fed up with the government scandals, are incensed by the mortgage (and now econonmy) crisis, yet there does not seem to be an upsurgence of grass-root organizations to make any change. Why is that? Apathy? Helplessness? Hopelessness? Ignorance?
