How do I make my 5th Generation iPod Mac format after being Windows format for it's whole life?

I reformatted it in windows and it works. (Within VMware fusion by the way) But in Mac, it recognizes it for a split second, and shows up on the desktop. iTunes opens and says “an ipod has been detected but could not be identified properly. Please disconnect and reconnect the ipod, then try again.” I’ve tried so many things and it only shows up on itunes in windows through vmware fusion!!!!
