Ties with polo shirts?

Everytime I wear a tie, I wear it with a button-down shirt. I’ve never questioned this: I’ve never seen someone wearing a tie with anything but a button-down.
Is there some unspoken rule against wearing ties with polo shirts, or is this something that is considered ‘OK, but undone’?
