Anyone ever had a 'dry socket'?

My dad recently had several teeth pulled. Being a smoker, and stubborn, he now has a dry socket and an infection.

What is good to eat while this heals? Any general tips for healing dry socket?

I realize this could be Googled, but I’d like to hear from some of you who may have had it or cared for someone who did.
