What are some nice indoor places to read in NYC?

Where are some places to go in NYC where I can sit and read, shielded from the weather? (E.g., buildings that have public lobbies, furniture stores which don’t notice me sitting on their chairs for a few hours, etc.)

I suppose specific cafés are worth mentioning if they’re particularly notable, but I’m thinking more along the lines of the parenthetical comment above.
