For a "real" first date how important do you think it is for the guy to actually call the girl and ask as opposed to a text or online chat?

We communicate thru texts, I talk to her almost every night online and have hung out with her one night along some with mutual friends, but have never called her on the phone. We are just friends, but Im pretty sure we both want to turn it up a notch
