On Mac, how can I play an mp4 file with subtitles? (there are two subtitle files, with .idx and .sub extensions)

I have three files: an mp4, and a folder called Subtitles that contains a .sub file and an .idx file.
The mp4 plays fine in both VLC and QT, as an mp4 usually would. But in either of those apps, the subtitles option is grayed out on the View menu so I can’t enable it.
