What is the best locally applied pain killer for tooth aches?

My friend is really suffering, and yes, we know a trip to the dentist is in order. For now, do you have any experience with those gels and solutions you apply to the tooth directly? Which one works best? We just got some orange “Orajel” solution, but that doesn’t seem to do anything.
