Why do people flame bait?

This question wasn’t inspired by any thread here. In fact I don’t even necessarily mean on Fluther, but in the real world. I see it all the time; at work, on the street, family gatherings, etc. I admit that I’ve done it before. People just seem to enjoy starting crap. Why do you suppose people do this? Is it human nature? Are you a mixer? Does flame baiting bother you?
