How do you change the VOB (dvd recorded format) into AVI or other editable formats?

I bought a video camera awhile ago which records onto little DVD’s. I was told I could put the recorded data on to my computer hard drive for uploading to youtube etc.

I recently uploaded these recordings to my computer a found that they all upload as one file with various chapters. The footage can be viewed in media player but I have been unable to edit, cut or format the video.

Attempts to download software which can change the format into an editable format have prooved fruitless.

Does anyone know how to change the VOB (dvd recorded format) into AVI or other editable formats?
