Should a tongue ring be swollen more than a couple days?

The bottom of my tongue hurts really bad when I eat or talk but the top does not. I have only been drinking slim fast and have been washing my mouth about 10 times a day, but it is still hurting after about three days. Is this a sign it might get infected or is it normal?
