Too much bleeding for a period, after giving birth six months ago?

My best friend had a baby almost six months ago. She started what she thought was her period two weeks ago, but she’s been bleeding heavily since then. She soaks through Super-Plus tampons in about two hours. She only has random, mild cramping. She’s also been breastfeeding the entire time, if that matters.

So, does anyone know if this is normal? I already suggested that she go to the doctor’s, but she’s hesitant because she doesn’t have insurance. She feels like it’d be a waste of money if all they say is that it’s normal and she has nothing to worry about.

I know most Flutherers don’t like giving medical advice, but, please share stories if you know anyone who has gone through something similar. Thanks!
