Why do people drink ginger ale on airplanes?

I know many people who order ginger ale on airplanes, but don’t drink it anywhere else. I rarely see anyone drink ginger ale when not on a plane. Why do so many people drink ginger ale on airplanes? My friend has a theory that parents give it to their kids on airplanes so that they don’t get sick, since ginger ale is supposed to calm your tummy. But is there another reason?
