Is there an easier way to manage the hundreds of channels now on our TV?

We have cable TV and with it comes 1,951 channels.
It occurred to me, as I scanned through hundreds of channels trying to find something worth watching how insane it was. By the time I found an interesting show it was already several minutes into the program.
I know that I can record and find programs but even this is annoyingly lame- using and arrow-press to select a letter at a time on the menu.
Knowing some of the brilliant minds on Fluther I would like to know how people manage the age of endless TV Channels.
Is there an easier way?
How do you all deal with the plethora of choices?
