Why is it that with a Cold- You get worse before it gets better?

I am currently fighting a sinus and lung infection thanks to the cold weather and metropolitan area where I live. I don’t like how the infection has traveled from my lungs and now my sinus’ and ears. Does anyone have the scientific reasoning as to how the virus works? references to websites are helpful. Thanks.
