Any tips on upgrading to USB 2.0 on an old Compaq running XP-Pro?

Someone gave me an old Compaq computer with XP-Pro. It has a decent size memory and hard drive, so I plan to use it in my digital music studio. The USB ports are only USB 1.0, so I bought a USB 2.0 PCI card. When I put it into the expansion slot, the machine will not boot. When I remove it, it will boot. The old USB ports are attached to the motherboard, so I can not remove them. Where do I go from here?
