When knit tops shrink in the dryer, why do they always shrink in the same direction?

Asked by Jeruba (55840points) January 19th, 2010

Why do they always shrink on the vertical dimension—that is, get shorter?

Sometimes I think they also get wider!—but still shorter.

I wouldn’t mind so much if they got narrower (tighter), but when they shorten they just don’t hang right or look right any more. Sometimes they also seem to acquire a twist: the seams are no longer vertical and there is no right way to fold them flat. Grrr.

(These are ordinary inexpensive women’s tops, of course; I have no idea how garments that cost more than $20—$35 or so behave.)

No matter how many times I wash them in cold water and let them air dry, sooner or later they get in the wrong pile or my husband suddenly takes a notion to do the wash, and they go through the dryer, coming out looking as if they’d been chopped off four or six inches short. What is it about their manufacture that makes them do this, and is there any way to recognize garments that won’t?
