Ted Kennedy held to his senate seat for 46 years before his death does that mean for lack of better words,he ran unopposed ?

My question is; with politicians like him that have held their seats for decades,is there a point where the opposing party gives up in believing they have a chance of dethroning a long standing politician and they just use the election as a platform for the challenging politician to get some exposure for future endeavors .
