I need advice on raising money to help a kind family in need.

I have been staying with a family(Mom: 42, Dad: 39, daughter: 2, 6 rescue dogs, 2 rescue cats). They were kind enough to allow me to board in the attic of their home until I get my feet on the ground. I contribute to food and utilities, but cannot afford rent right now(they told me I can pay rent in March, but I plan to once I get a job).

Anyways, they are also struggling with money. Dad is desperately making the full effort to get work(a painter), mom is an at-home mom.

A huge 120 year old tree just fell in their property. They had half of it removed two days ago(and actually tapped into his life insurance policy, the money he was going to use on mortgage), then the rest collapsed last night in the street, on the fence, and in the yard :( They are drowning, it is one thing after another(other stuff I cannot mention)...

I know this is the facts of life, but they are the kindest, most giving, considerate group of people I have met here. Any suggestions on how I can help? I wanted to make a flyer to ask the neighbors and community but do not know where to begin, or if that is appropriate. The tree was a beautiful acacia tree, could they sell the wood or something…
