Why do my teeth hurt when I chew sugar free gum?

Lately I have been on a gum chewing kick. I make sure I chew brands that are good for my teeth like orbit and stride etc… However after a while of chewing my molars begin to hurt like they do when I eat too much sugary food. Why does this happen if the gum is sugar-free?
