What's the best way to make your diamonds shine?

Assuming there’s no jewelry cleaning product around, how would you clean a diamond necklace, ring, earrings?

I use whitening toothpaste and a soft toothbrush currently but I am not so happy with the results (the shine doesn’t sparkle, nor does it last long).
